OUTSTANDING!!

Although some of us didn't fare too well Chris Foster and Ian Miskin demonstrated some excellent flying at Wether fell today. Chris made goal at Leyburn during the 2nd task of the BPC and Miskin, who was not in the comp, flew all the way to Bridlington an amazing 130km!!

amazing and great to see chris thermaling out alone in fron of semmer to end up in goal i was doing my best in a last dich atempt on a small ridge when 5 others thought it would be good to join only to make me go down and every one else as well. may be next time but what the heck some good flying and the bus waiting as we landed.

Yes, very well done lads, what a frustrating weekend for the rest of us.
Funny how times change, 2 years ago I flew my first 'on my own' xc from Weather Fell, absolutley fantastic, I was jumping up and down for weeks afterwards, this weekend I'm frustrated and gutted at not getting further. When we drove home I passed the landing field from 2 years ago and looking across the valley I could see that where we landed today was almost exactly the same distance from Weather. If I'd flown to the valley floor, I would probably have gone further. All I got from Saturday was a 2 hour walk passed by 20 plus 2 seater sports cars on a ralley before the comp retrieve bus turned up.

Probably my most enjoyable flight of the year so far form Wether Fell on Sunday. BPC round 2 a 24km task to Layburn. Conditions were nice once away from the hill, in a small gaggle we headed past Semerwater and picked up a few zeros just past the lake, Garry, out front headed for Addlebrough, the flat top hill to the east of Semer and was soaring this quite successfully. Two gliders on the south side of the lake seemed to be maintaining so I decided to give that a try, as I went towards them they bailed out and headed towards Garry who was now attracting gliders like moths to a flame. Trying hard to concentrate on the vario we got someone on radio explaining Gary and his new chums where soaring a flying site, he went on to explain a bit about the site, landing fields, retrieve options and where to get the best cream tea in Bainbridge. This put me off a bit but I rounded up a few more zeros that turned into a half up and I drifted over the now very congested Addlebrough feeling quite chuffed.
But not for long, some strong sink to the lea of the hill had me thinking I’d be down PDQ. Gliding straight downwind, now about 400ft agl I got a blip which turned out to be a really nice climb almost to base. Conditions from then on were good and there was obviously a lot more left in the day but I was pleased to make goal, for only the second time in a BPC task. Major respect to Ian who showed what was possible on the day, 130km a fantastic flight.
It was good to have the company of quite a few Northumbria pilots at the comp but everyone there helped make this another enjoyable weekend. (But for some reason I still have a nagging feeling I’ve dropped another bolock)
Apparently the cream teas were tiptop.
