The Border's Cup

Post by John Wallis »

The Border's Cup was a competition between the hang gliding clubs that were either side of the England Scotland border. Cumbria Northumbria Lanark and Lothian. The idea was hatched between Heidi Fawcett, Ed Cleasby and myself probably before paragliders roamed the earth maybe just post anto infiltrator period.

The trophy which has been in Peter Rutherford's possession for many years now as a fruit bowl (He was the last winner of the comp) is lying there just waiting to be challenged for.

I wonder if there would be any interest in the clubs mentioned to start what was an excellent comp/weekend between the English and the Scots once again.

From what I can remember any amount of pilots from each club could enter but only the best 5/6 pilots scored

Miskin can you circulate this is Scotland please.

Not much interest on the forum up here - maybe the time of year. Lay down the gauntlet in the spring perhaps?

Borders cup

Post by Kitt Rudd »

The bowl is a Quaich (pronounced /ˈkweɪx/),a special kind of shallow two-handled drinking cup or bowl in Scotland. I thik the english version is a porringer.

Not as far as the Scots or Cumbrians were concerned they never had the skill to win it. It was only the Northumbrians that drank from the Quaich (Thanks for that Kitt)

I doubt anything would change if we fought for it again..................

There is interest in this from the Lanarkshires but they are wondering if it will be HG in any way............

Apparently this year they are entering the BCC.

Wallis is the man in the hot seat for this.

If we get interest from all clubs it will be paragliding only. I really don't think we could get a team of hang gliders together? Or am I wrong. No I think I'm right so paragliding it is.
