Like the rest of us bumblers I didn’t get far yesterday, came down short of Garagill and decided it would be a good idea to walk back to high cap over the top of cross fell. I'd herd all the stories about how remote this place is and knew it would take weeks if not months to make my way back but as it was gona be blown out anyway, I thought what the heck.
I checked in with Ian and Dave Horne just so people knew I was ok and set off. It took 2 hours to get to Gregs Hut where I'd promised myself lunch, didn’t pass another sole all the way there. I had a look around the bothy as my last visit had been about 35yrs ago.
I was just about to tuck into my cheese sarnies when I heard the roar of an engine outside, thought I was loosing the plot but in walked a very sociable chap, Nigel Headly, a contractor who was looking at some work in the area, we got talking and the long and short of it he offered me a lift over the top in his 8 wheel drive thingy.
This amazin vehicle just seemed to go wherever, it didn’t have a steering wheel, he just drove it using the gear stick. Nigel dropped me off just over the top and it was about another half hours walk back to the car.
Not the best flight of the day by a long way but a canny retrieve.

Brilliant pics Chris! You sure got lucky there. Was relieved to get your call as last I saw was various people disappearing over the back underneath or in a very large grey cloud - the same one that set me away
Great day even if "us bumblers" didn't make that much distance, it was still a great experience, specially laughing at Wallis being drilled into Melmerby bowl while he was laughing at me getting a good hiding on Low Scar and full speed bar to get down to Melmerby. Heh heh
