Abroad thoughts from home.....

Post by AlastairW »

O, TO be in England
Now that April 's there,

Robert Browning just didnt know what he was talking about... and didnt have the benefit of a 747 to whisk him 6000 miles in 12 hours....

I would love to say it is great to be home, but it is difficult to summon up the enthusiasm for a cold grey morning in Newcastle, when twenty four hours ago we were flying in 30 degree heat, with stonking climbs, and a retrieve van full of cold beer.

Was it fun? You bet! The biggest flying I have ever done, with virtually no opportunity to relax. Powerfull thermals with strong and often ill defined cores, and the potential to fly big distances.

Sods law of course says that the best day weather wise was the last...... we HAD to be down and packed up by 2pm to ensure we got to cape town in time for our flights home. And of course that was the day when you end up having flown 32 k in just over an hour, and the potential to push on down some fantastic cloud streets. So at 1pm I spiralled down from 4500ft. But there is always next time......

Other highlights?? Whale watching at Hermanus... flying out along the cliffs and watching 60ft long whales breaching only 100m from the beach.
Wine...... you could become an expert very cheaply... and there is nothing better than ordering a bottle from the vineyard you passed that afternoon.
Great company, and a relaxing fortnight in the run up to Christmas.

I will definitely go back.

And will post some more later..... back to the grindstone now though.....
It is sad to measure your life in terms of hours flown...... but even sadder not to.........
