The weather and how to get the best from it

Post by John Wallis »

While chatting at the Tankerville arms in Wooler yesterday the weather was being discussed and the end result was it would be a good idea to have an open forum at the next club meeting (If nothing booked) The likes of how to get the best from RASP Synoptic charts weather sites / stations clouds fronts isobars etc etc

What do people think would it be advantageous? I would love someone to bring in a lap top and show me the best way to get the best from rasp.

Response please :)

Hiyah John

On a more serious note this would be good for our club, the weather dictates everything that we do and it will save you a lot of time & dosh when traveling out on wasted days due to lack of better understanding.

You can't go wrong with the UK weather system if you understand the three most important fundamentals HUMIDITY - TEMPERATURE & PRESSURE

Understand these 3 buggers your almost there ! 8)
Maximise your time & dosh do both Hanggliding & Paragliding :)

Anyone willing to share their hard earned knowledge about using rasp or any other forecasting techniques at a club meeting will be much appreciated!

Spoke to Bill at Model Ridge today and there's loads away at Laragna for the next meeting maybe the month after but I do think this is a good topic to follow up on. Like Ron said humidity temp and pressure just to mention a few things are important. I think keeping it as simple as possible would be most advantageous because you can get too deep and it can get boring.

To keep it simple, just learn to use RASP its the best forecasting tool out there. once you've got the hang of that you can look at the synoptics to try and fathom out why things are happening, if you want to.
A quick idiots guuide is to look at the star rating, then at the 2m wind to give a take off point, from there, there's to much detail to put in a post.
Take today, Model ridge, 2-3 star, 2m wind 8-12mph, NNE. sounds ok. Cb 2800, thermal updraft 3m/ps, height of thermal updraft 3200, OD 100%. you can then look at wind direction and speed at different heights and so it goes on. But as usual, a perfect description of todays weather.
See you out there!!!!!
