winter xc leugue

Post by gary stenhouse »

if i am not mistaken this is one trophy between pg and hg or can you take the best combined flights between 2 diciplines as this does change the outcome. just a thought in these competitive times and big prizes waiting.

Why do we call it XC league (winter) when its not about going XC ? its more about who can stay up the longest and fly up and down the same ridge (OLC points)

We definitely have got somthing wrong when someone goes XC (over the back) and ends up with less points than someone 'SOARING' a ridge for a couple hours ?

Gary, the 'Winter League Trophy' is for the HG or PG pilot with the most points.

to encourage new pilots to have a chance in what is normaly winter conditions. none of my ridge runs have been done at the coast infact i would say i am one of the few people to get into ingleby bowl and get out again.

this is the same for all winter leagues but as the summer comes open distance comes in play

There was a new trophy bought last year we now have a winter Paragliding winner and a winter Hang gliding winner. The photos have been up since last year see the link below.

Olc is 5 turn points only.

This has been up for two years Ron, might be good time to read it.

A ridge run (out return) has always been scored more than a straight line point to point.

You have went over the back once that I know of in the last 3 years Ron, without 'SOARING' a ridge for a couple hours what else have you done?

Lead by example Ron.

Site records

Post by ron freeman »

Steve... Considering that I hold quite a few of our site XC records ! so I do lead by example.

I am also in second place with one open distance XC flight which is also the longest flight so far this year ! yet another example...

For the last two years I have always said OLC is not right and we should be using summer league (open distance)

In my opinion OLC over complicates & fails to reward the more demanding flights.

3 Turn Point
Open Distance
OLC Distance

look at the three scoring systems and you will see the same three names in the top three.

It all pans out Ron, so long as everyone is on the same playing field, all is fair.

Point to point is an old fashioned, dated way to score. This way everyone gets a chance to take part, and is that not the most important thing?

this is why we do open distance in the summer and not olc 3 turn even though nxl uses this yes open distance can be more dificult but also a out and return or triangle. we all no the rules and why go over the back on a glide if you can enjoy a whole days soaring and get the same points. dont get me wrong if i get in a thermal with a decent base i will go open xc. after all its not about winning its all about taken part. come on ron you cant realy be bothered about winning a winter xc leugue given your realistic abuility like wise i think gary wirdnam does not feel it would be right to. i think when you have been a world pilot there is never realy going to be much valor to wining a winter xc league yet for us up and coming pilots it is something well worth having. at the end of the day as it means nothing the only thing that matters most is who does the most on the same hill on the same day that is the true top pilot. lets see what the year has instore as the big 100 approaches and hopefully this year it will be done on either or or both.
if we had been working on out and return then i would even be doing better

We've done this to death a million times, are we going to have another go or shall we argue about something more current?
The sky looks great today, anyone out flying?

Steve, its got nothing to do with 'old fashioned or dated'

A 6.5km ridge soaring flight is now worth more points than a 16.9km open distance flight ! this is not right.

Errrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr! Can't believe we're having this debate again... anyhow I can't resist sticking my oar in so here's a few things we need to keep in mind..

open distance; get to base, glide down wind, score points... sounds easy but there are few major hurdles for the inexperienced, e.g. "how do I know I'm high enough to avoid rotor?" and "is that next ridge into wind?" Sounds obvious but these issues, amongst others, are enough to stop new pilot from scoring XC points.

"Ridge runs are for muppets"..... well not exactly. In fact the process of flying up and down a ridge can present some interesting challenges, especially if it incorperates a couple of spurs, gulleys and bowls etc. Don't get me wrong there are clearly a few 'milk runs' being submitted to the winter XC league but the process of flying infront of the ridge gives newbies an opportunity to explore XC flying in bite size chunks.

Multiple turnpoints, for the man who can't get it up! Well hummm? again a new set of challenges and considerations, up wind down wind legs, reading the terrain, bar no bar etc. Bearing in mind that the National XC league includes turnpoint flights is it not wise that we give our boys the opportunity to practise now before they stick their 100k triangle into the Nat league only to find out that they did't close the circuit?

Rules. yep gotter confess some of them are crap and I don't agree with em, but I do appreciate that they are there to be rodged, badgered, buggered and generally abused in anyway 'we' can...... and that the same for 'all' of us.

And finally, we need to take the whole league thing (winter and summer) with a pinch of salt, it's more a reflection of who managed to get out on the good days rather than who's the best pilot; I look at individual flights and other displays of flying skill before assigning my respect to any pilot, not their number of the XC league.

PS I've got four flights to bang in the league when do they need to be in by?

what will be interesting that after all this i would say the winner will be the winner and that is either open xc 3 turn point as ultimately they all ad up the same.
