The prodigal son, sort of

Post by MadDog »

That’s the door closed firmly on last year then….Good riddance…
I might be able to get some flights into the xc league now.
Out with the unwanted old and in with good hope for the new.
Tuesday put the last of the icing on the cake for me, a very forgettable hump up through the frozen haw, and slippy ice, on the track up to the top of Souter Fell.
Hi Ho, here we go…Off to Scales fell……Nearly there, and the word came back….Retreat, About turn, all flying cancelled…Now if the hump up was bad the hump down was just pure delight…..many thanks to both Brian’s, and newcomer Glenn, for their help on the way up and the way down.
How could you describe the day?.......
Epic!
Why do I always associate the Lakes with pain, I wonder?
Miskum is right of course…(as he always is)….we always tend to forget that we have a good south…south easterly in Hownham Law, to whose top you can drive….Perhaps that was the place to be….Some times the Freeman hills come up with the goods when you least expect them to….But you have to know the formula for good flying days, and that secret is held only by the wise one himself….
Only he has the formula which calculates the co-relation between the strength of the wind down Newbiggin high street, the state of the tide at Sandy Bay caravan park, and the strength of the low level wave on East Hill ….Only he knows when the good times are coming…only thing is….. he never tells us until its all over
All lovely stuff…
If only we could all predict what kind of day we were going to get, before we got to get it …
I’m seriously thinking about abandoning ship this year and going back to running with the Troglodytes again….
Bye- bye Gary…..Bye-bye Brian.
The lure of flying Titlington Pike once again is burning within me…
The thought of humping up Longknowe for a swift top to bottom fills me with longing.
And East hill for a jolly old gale dangle, or a joy filled dragging brings the smile of fond memories back to me once again…..
I’m going to pay up my subs and join the proper Northumbrian club again, where Blease Fell is a naughty word, and Tailbridge is five fingers down your throat…
I’m finished forever with that transient world where every body is an ace, except yourself, and a man or woman,( in the case of Wallis), is measured by his distance from the hill he took off from….I’m out….I’m turning the Oxygen regulator back down to “Economy”, and going with the flow now….
Back where I came from….where it all began, before I heard the sirens…..
Anyone up for a lift to the Powburn café?

John how many more times must I tell you "Not" to drink the elixir on New Year's Eve it will have you hallucinating about the Cheviots and all that magical lift that you know doesn't exist. Well it does but only on the days that scaramanger drinks in the Plough and the wind is off to the south on Titilington Pike. The lift is to be found on the latitudes north and south of the Cheviots like Scotland the Dales North Yorkshire and beyond, the Cheviots were formed in the doldrums where lift doesn't exist. I'm sure when the potion wares off and you see what you've written you will be flabergasted.

So tomorrow are you flying Lordenshaw Ewe Hill or the East Durham Coast??

:)

There will be more rejoicing in Powburn over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous person who do not need to repent.
Had a grand day at east hill on Monday, 250 ft above take off (I had to take off at the bottom of the hill cos it was quite windy). Only me and two of Sunderland's finest, Steve and Alan had the place to ourselves, champion!
