Task 2 of the BPC round at the Mynd saw us at Bache in quite windy conditions. The task was an elapsed time race to goal at Montgomery about 36 km downwind. The wind was forecast to pick up so I didn’t hang around for long after the start. It took al little while to get to base but I eventually made it with a bunch of about 8 other gliders. Talking it easy and trying to stay with the lift, about 1800 ft above takeoff, I drifted over the back where it got a bit rough. Still trying to stay with the lift I seemed to lose touch with the others, found myself alone and before long I was on a glide with nothing much to aim at. Thinking I should have stuck with the gaggle I found a few bits of lift but couldn’t make anything stick and landed after 8km.
Chris Jackson joined me in the field and we made our way to the nearby hamlet of Llanbister Road where we met up with Jake Herbert. There was no phone signal and not much else other than a railway station.
While we were trying to work out the train timetable, an elderly local resident requested my help to negotiate a stile. She was quite a hefty old dear but job done she offered us all a cup of tea and we spent a pleasant while in her back garden chatting with the old dear and a young Chinese girl who just seemed to appear. In no time at all the next train was due so the 3 of us tromped off to the station where we got the train to Knighton, hoping for a phone signal, ice-cream and retrieve.
We were joined by more BPC wannabee’s in Knighton where dark chocolate maganums seemed to be the lolly of choice. With retrieve buses heading in all directions it didn’t take long before I got a lift back to the hill to get my car, thus completing a triangle course by 3 different modes of transport which should earn me triple green shield stamps.
This was my 3rd flight on the demo Avax XC2 which was class. If I’m honest, I was a bit disappointed not to get further but it was still a grand day out.
