East hill triangle back in June 1984 - Club day out on East hill, the wind was n.west 12-15mph very thermic.
The ridge lift was poor and everyone was having a hard time staying up then I saw the sea breeze coming in over the top of Titlington pike.
The sea breeze became stuck at the end of Ingram valley, it could not penetrate up the valley with the opposing n. west wind.
The convergence line was clearly visable with a tattered curtain coming down to 300 ft above East hill and stretching all the way to Wooler !
I was still soaring West hill so I flew along to the back of East hill with only 200ft ato and there it was smooth lift to 5,400ft asl ! magic.
I could see all the other pilots on the ground running across to East hill to fly the sea breeze which by now was a healthy 15mph s.east.
At cloudbase I had to be careful because there were globs of cloud running up the face of the tattered curtain of cloud and I did not want to end up in the cloud because I know from passed experience that convergence can be very rough air if you end up in the wrong place !
I flew up the line of lift to Wooler (no problem) then I had to turn back or fly through the sea breeze and land just passed Wooler. With all the height I had I flew over to the Cheviot itself, what a view I could see for miles to the west but behind me there was this huge curtain of grey cloud !!
I arrived back at East Hill all within the hour, still at 2000ft ato ! and the sea breeze curtain was still hanging over East hill so I decided to do it all again. After three hours in the air ! the sea breeze died off, the wind became a light westerly so I landed back on top of West hill next to the cars !
I wish we had GPS then, the flight trace would have been something else.
Cheviot hills for thrills.
Here's a good one for you Gary !
