Marsk to Whitby (one of thse days)

Post by chrisfozz »

I enjoyed the flight a lot specially the bit from Staithes onward. There were obviously quite a few bits out of wind but it was quite lifty and there was enough on the north facing cliffs to gain the height necessary to drop onto the next lifting section. At times I had to stay well out from the cliffs that were more or less parallel to the wind to avoid rota, at Port Mulgrave and when crossing Runswick Bay, flying out over the water was an interesting experience.
I think the difficult parts of the flight were the initial crossing to Saltburn Cliffs and getting over Staithes- I had 1000ft which helped a lot as did Ron Don and John Millar leading the way. Thanks.
It is obviously possible to go further; Ali Guthrie has flown past Whitby, I decided to land because I didn’t think I had the height to glide to Sandsend, the next bit of the coast into-wind. I think a little more east in the wind might help at this point but it would also make earlier sections more difficult.
Thanks also to Ron for the photos, Steve Marshal for checking I was OK and some people who I’ve never met before for giving me a lift back.
