Harness adjustment

Post by Kitt Rudd »

Hi Spencer,
You say that you have adjusted the harness to a more upright position.
My concern is not simply rectified by moving to a more upright position. It is the positioning of the hangpoints, harnesses like the vamp have lower hangpoints than a standard intermediate harness. This lower positioning creates more feedback which in your early days of flying will not add to your feeling of security as you have not yet acquired the knowledge or experience to decipher the differences between air movement, wing feedback, weight shift etc this could more easily unsettle.

hang safe

Ok, I will add my two pennysworth....

The Vamp is described as a "Comp / XC Hound" harness on Northerns website. By no stretch of the imagination are you anywhere near being that.

In other words a bit like passing your driving test and jumping into a Ferrari.

Steve Giles (Milleboy) is the owner of the "Sick and Wrong" ( the only place for a cup of coffee in Keswick...!) and knows what he is talking about.

Ian Miskin (Misk) is a former hanglider pilot who has competed at world level, and now flies paragliders. Take a look at the National XC league, and you will see that he is pretty near the top.....

They do actually know what they are talking about. They really dont say anything negative without having given much consideration first. Why not listen to them?

Or you can choose to ignore their advice, scare yourself silly, and give up the sport. None of us wants to see you do that..... you appear keen which is excellent!

Please take on board what is being said.
It is sad to measure your life in terms of hours flown...... but even sadder not to.........

Spenkyg having been on the receiving end of threads like this before I know it may feel like everone is having a go but they are not. they only have your safety in mind. I dont know who your instructor is but there are instructors on here as well who may be able to help you. Ron freeman and gordie being two of them.
If Acro was easy they'd call it Cross Country

Iv got a vamp and love it iv flown it for may long minuets and barely had time to wipe the smile off my face. Cant see what you nancy boys are all crying about. If I were you id buy it and join our exclusive club. If you like you can store it in Ron Dons garage were I keep mine. Its safer there and i know hell let me have a go on the coast next spring if I'm good.

Hello again all!

Right I have just compiled a long and sensitive responce to all your comments....and thenm the silly f%£$ing computer did something unexpected, and I lost it! :x

So apologies if this responce is a little brief (the misses is starting to want my company!)

Okay, Thanks all for your comments. It has not all been in vain.

I will be making doubly sure that my instructor knows the harness and is aware of its dangers.

I will make sure that it is properly set up as is sensible.

I will wait until I have a responce from U-turn regarding its suitablity with the wing.

I will not perservear with it if it in anyway feels wrong or scary to use.

I will make sure that there is a spare school harness on the hill so that if I don't like it I won't waste a flying day. (fingers crossed that it is!!!!!)

And I will let you all know how I get on, either on the forum or in the pub in a couple of weeks (where I belive there may be a chance of winning a vamp harness!)

I look faorward to seeing you all on 'the hill' soon.

Thanks again for all the responces, concern and information. I'm off to watch trash whilst consoling myself with wine!

After reading all of this string i think you have made a very wise decision Spencer - something that must be congratulated - you have listened to all of the advice and then taken it on board. One question....was it red or white

Seriously though there are a lot of good guys (& gals) on this forum and whilst they may not always support your decisions, they do have your best interests at heart as regards your safety (and theirs if you are flying on the same site).

However one caveat is - don't believe a word that they say once you in a heavy drinking environment
