Titers on Friday

Post by ron freeman »

Titers on Friday... why was the lift so good at times then rubbish and bumpy at other times ?

Titlington Pike is only 700ft asl with a raggy ridge thats not too steep and the face is only 260 ft tall but.. it can produce some very good lift in the right conditions ? remember the hill is just a starting point and its all about the quality of air that flows over it..

In the photo you can clearly see three paragliders Ron Don is the first and just still in the ridge lift, Brian day is the high one well out of ridge lift with Gary Sten following behind. Whats keeping them up its certainly not ridge lift !

Low level wave was clearly to be seen up wind due to the give away clouds forming like cigars just above the hill tops up wind in the Cheviots.

The wind was blowing a steady 14-16mph from the s.west when the photo was taken then about 15 mins later the wind suddenly change to the west and dropped off.. it was like cutting the lift with a pair of sissors, sink everywhere and pilots scattered on the hill side with no time to topland !

Basically what happened was the low level wave lift was now out of faze with the ridge lift from Titers and the rising air was being squashed by the out of faze wave.. hence no lift.

I would highly recommend that all paraglider pilots read up as much as you can about wave and how it all works to maximise your airtime and safety.
