Safety in flying

I went to see Rick Livingstone in the RVI today. He is progressing well and hopes to be discharged at the weekend. However he has been advised to take things very steady for a while.

He mentioned a few accidents in the CSC recently, and because of this Ed Cleasby intends to organise a meeting on safety matters to which all clubs will be invited. Maybe Colin would like to contact Ed about this.

It does seem to have been a bad couple of weeks for safety

as safety officer I have been thinking that we all need to be more carefull and think about the limits of high wind flying and other practices. we all have choices but if you take of and get yourself blown straight up and out the back of the hill because you cant get bar it means its too windy. the thing is 29mph averaging down to 26.5 mph is to windy regardless of your wing. when this sport bites it is big and this is just one incident of the weekend. there was to many to mention as check peoples track logs and check how and direction of landing and 50kph downwind landing could easily leave you in pieces.

unfortunately the next meeting is the club auction and due to unforeseen I may not be in a fit state to be there but hope I can.

remember we do it for fun and you are a long time dead if you get it wrong for the wong reason

as I videoed one of the high wind take offs there is some very good learning on it as when you look closer you realise its not totally due to high wind.

what happens as every time stretching for the pod the beaks go on, this then gives him lift and makes him go backwards, and think if stayed hands up going forwards may have been achievable.

this may not be 100% true but when you create huge drag with your body the parasitic drag causes the angle of your glider forward creating higher ground speed. still very good video to realise that there is more to going backwards than just the wind when caught on hi def. video

I wasn't there so can only speculate and don't want to pr-em pt any proper investigation's but from what i have heard from witnesses and the photos Ive seen it does seem to me that on Sunday people were making some obvious mistakes .
Dare I say mistakes were they should have known better

But ill stop my speculation here as that's all it is speculation.
we should get some clear facts first and if conclusions can be drawn we should then make some clear recommendations to prevent further incidents.

what is the response of the north yorks club ??

What happened at Whitby I do see as a miss calculation. What worries me more is the attitude and behaviour of some of the pilots Saturday.

I have just been through the notes from angusus brilliant right ups and if people attended the meetings they would see that this year alone had discussed in detail all incidents and accidents that we knew about. This been the case I think it should be the duty of more pilots to attend club meetings and to see that it is not all about useless drivel
