live tracking

Post by chrisfozz »

I’ve recently set up live tracking on my android mobile phone. There’s sticky page in the “flying today” section with a link to my tracking page. It seems to work quite well and I think it could be really useful if more people were using it, we’d be able to see who’s out flying and where they are, as well as being useful for retrieves.

It uses mobile phone signals to transmit positions so its not infallible but what I’ve seen of it so far seems quite good, it does not appear to be too harsh on the phone battery and other than a small amount of data use its free.

To use it you need to install XCSoar from http://www.xcsoar.org/ and then set up a username etc with Skylines at https://www.skylines-project.org/users/new . XC soar, in my opinion, is quite a complex system giving loads of info but if all you want is to show people where you are at it’s not too complicated to set up, if you have a go and get stuck just give me a call.

If you get it working post a link to you’re tracking page here and I’ll put them all together under the Live Tracking Sticky page in flying today so we have them all in the one place.

Good luck
Chris

yes you can switch it off or just leave your phone at home, forget to charge it up, leave it in the car when you go flying, drop it in a bucket of water or down the loo.

Doesn't appear to be available for the iphone Chris, can't find the app.
Thing is, Garry and I use live track24, (heavy battery use) and Spot, but no one pays any attention to them, except those that recieve an email alert or facebook alert from Spot. We both have our own Spot page and a club can have it's own page with pilots registered to the page. I think Gary and I are the only ones to have accessed our pages. :( Which isn't a great help as we are usually stuck in the middle of nowhere together!
It would be nice if we could all get one system that worked for all.

Your right Brian, it’s not available for an iphone.
Personally I don’t think its too important that we all use the same system but if I happened to be looking for someone I think it would be good to know where to look, so to speak, hence the sticky at the top of the flying today page. – I’m hoping to create a list of links to live tracking pages.
I’ve taken the liberty of adding Garry’s, if anyone else would like to be added I’ll need to know the web address for their page.

I've got the XC Soar app on my phone but never used it since installing back when Gary said it was good..last year sometime. A quick lesson would be good Chris if you don't mind at a meeting or one to one.

Well, after being a total tool and trying all morning to create a new user on the app and failing, I realised that, maybe, just maybe, it would be the same user account as my Live track24 account.....Doh!!!!!

So I'm there now, search and find me as Nezzy01

Just incase you're wondering,,,,,,Nezzy is the make of a surfboard from Oceanside California that I surfed for years after bringing it back in 2001 until my dear son broke a good foot off the nose of it. Repaired and hanging in the garage as a decoration, stringer broken so no good for use

Isn't it worth the androids joining LiveTrack24 as well, then it will be worth building a club page?

At least on the walk back from East Hill you'll encounter some rather good looking sheep and one big boy bull, better than any offer from John Wallis! Do I hear the strains of a banjo drifting over Brokeback mountain?

Found you Graeme52, this is turning out to be a right 'boys club' come on Wallis, you know you want to join, we won't laugh at your little one!

I've been in touch with Moneypenny and M, the exact position of secret agent Wallis is now being tracked. They were unfortunately more reluctant to pass on information regarding any of the Bond girls. :(

The CSC (with some DHPC) has an L24 group (about a dozen at present) .... Skylines is OK, but best to stick with one or the other. There are several iphone and android aps that let you do it very simply ...... mine is through xcsoar (android only) however .... bit like LK8000 (iphone only) which spun out from it ... xcsoar is in my opinion better and very simple. clear menu. system. Battery life on my S4 is 15% /hour with everything running , but best to turn off terrain for clarity. Because it's in a 4700mAh power cradle that provide for 8 - 10 hrs continual use. Data use when tracking is very low but depends how you set. If you prefer Skylines then try xctrack .... which is good for comp tasking.

Whatever you do don't buy a Kobo unit to run xcsoar ...... utter shit solution. Like putting a Ferrari engine in an old Ford. You lose all the colour functions and it has no sim card holder ..... and is cheap and nasty!!
