Club Comp on Saturday??
Moderator: Club Moderators
John..............That sounds good to me and accomodates anyone setting out late but how about starting from the Radar Masts (as take off) for late arrivals?
Its easy to access and avoids a long drive and walk to take off at High Cap, so atleast that way anyone turning up later in the day gets the best chance to complete the task, but starting and finishing at the Mast

Feel the fear and do it anyway!

Thanks to Chris Foster we have a file to download to our instruments with the turn points on.

Chris Little as long as no one else is bothered I can't see any problem with taking off at the radar masts if you are running late, but ideally we want everyone taking off from high Cap. The only point I would make is make sure you cover all the way points.
I'm keeping a close eye on the synoptics and at this moment in time the high pressure for Saturday is getting squeezed by the mid Atlantic low :/
Have to keep an eye on that having said that there is also the Cross Fell effect to take into consideration.
Could be the best club outing of the year

waypoints
If anyone wants to download waypoints to their gps from the link given above by John -
Using skytraxx, click on the “save .wpt” link, accept the download then copy the file to the waypoints folder on the gps.
Flytec etc use .gpx files to transfer waypoints. You can download Cross_Fell_Club_Comp.gpx by clicking “save.gpx”. You will need some 3rd part software eg gpsdump to then transfer the waypoint to your unit.
If you get stuck you can give me a ring or post questions here.

looking at the forecast we could be having to go to sunday now as looks very southerly. though I am hoping that things change again or if southerly then if not too strong the lakes may be on the cards as well.
tomorrow Friday could end up being quite good for the radar masts so may be trying to get a blast over there if something goes right for once.

According to Metcheck both Pennines and Cheviots are knackered

Looking at the Chart I would have thought the Cheviots were in with a chance?? Would pilots be happy to use Hownam?? I still don't think it's the best site for anyone low airtime but canny for the rest of us.
Will post a final decision tonight after I've seen the BBC weather

I agree John. Not saying that it has no chance but it's looking slim. Don't really see the point in dragging every to a hill unless it's flyable.
I'll also check weather this evening...in the meantime suggest we put the comp on 'Amber alert'.

Do you know anything about the Etrex Chris?
Brian Nellist said Chris Little has/had one so I'll text him too.
Comp sounds like it should make for a great day if the weather comes on but not sure I'll be up for the tasks at the mo.

With the forecast being unsettled I think a postponement is the sensible thing to do. I thought the west looked wet low cloud and drizzle?
Hownam may be the best bet for a bit of free flying but could still be windy, I think it's a case of suck it and see. It's a pity because for once we would have had a good turnout.
Watch this space and hopefully we can get something on in the near future.
Sunday they were giving 20MPH
