Here is a strange one!

Post by RonDon »

Here is a strange one! In the seventies when I was walking the North Tyne River I came across a church which I had not seen before.

So cutting across the field get to it, I could see two head stones
on the out side of the church yard wall?

The Gent had just passed away, and his wife had placed her head stone next to him, with what she wanted on it I think, but no dates?.
This is not an uncommon thing in Scotland. The dates are added to it when they pass away.

No outer wall at this time around the headstones.

When ever I was passing I would pop in to see how they where getting
on. Then one time I looked in and a wall had been built around with a gate and the lady had come to rest beside her man.

But why out side the church wall?

Hi Ron,

In some areas of the country it was the accepted practice to bury someone just outside the church grounds, the consecrated area, if they had committed suicide.
