Anyone up for a hump? possible new Northerly.

Post by John Watson »

I’ve thought of flying this new site for a few years now, but like a lot of things, I never seem to get round to doing it.
This site should be of special interest to most I think despite its big carry up, it’s Cross Fell, --- yes that’s right Cross Fell, but the North Face, directly behind Greg’s hut. Its got excellent XC potential, a possible flight would take you over Appleby, The Howgills, and on to Blackburn after 107km Via the Dales.
I’ve already been up there and had a look and I am very convinced it will be a cracking place to fly; the only problem is the big hump!!
The topography in front of the northern face is excellent, with a big bowl channelling the rising air and thermals towards the face. Lots of dark heather in front and an immediate backdrop eliminating that long scrape over the moors, this would be a great club outing, so lets have some names and we’ll give it a go one day when the winds are in the North. 8)

Not forgetting the Helm Bar in the Lea of Cross Fell in a North to North East :lek: Your eyes might look like this when you hit it.

You dont get the Helm Bar in a very light wind john, which is what it would have to be, being so high. I thought you would be a good choice for the OUTING

It sounds like a reet good jaunt Johnny but the steep escarpments behind Cross Fell might cause some sink ?? I've seen the Helm Bar present in a moderate wind in fact flew through it in an aeroplane waiting for something to happen but not a lot did to be honest. Might be different on a piece of cloth. If you really want to do it I've got a contact who has a key to the gates on the track out of Garrigal up to Gregs hut. If we can get that a 4x4 will get you almost to the top.

Sounds brilliant John, the "keys" bit doesnt sound too good but if we cant get them the access from high cap isnt too bad, abit exercise didnt do any harm, so I take it you are up for it? --- any other's ??

I've got a loan of a new light weight harness so am definately up for it, however, if we can find an easy way up there I would be even more motivated.

Think There will be massive sink when we go over the back in anything other than still air?

Not getting the negative weather thing with flying the back of Xfell. By all accounts it should be better than the west side. Seeing as it is exposed to the NNE the wind would have to blow some distance over the countryside before getting there....hence should be dryer.

We'll keep an eye on the weather then, first weekend it looks promising we'll give it a go  it must be very light northerlys with a canny base.
bring it on. dont forget, the sea breeze would take a long time (if ever) to reach this far inland.
