There is a brilliant example of an inversion layer on Tonys video.
Look at the smoke in the distance, just after the opening screen. You will see it rises at an angle of about 30 degrees from the vertical, then flattens out. The reason for this is that the smokey air (which is warmer than the surrounding air) hits a layer of air above it which is itself warmer, and so the smoke does not rise through it. A bit like smoke hitting a ceiling.
I think that inversion was only a few hundred feet above take off, and took a while to break through.
