**HOT NEWS** CHEVIOT CHAMPION CONQUERS CUMBRIAN COMPETITION!

Post by Sad Northerner »

Yes that's right folk our very own champion and ambassador for the Cheviots Gary Stenhouse has cleaned up at the Lakes Charity Classic!!!... and here's the irony, he did it in a out and return pylon style race!!

So I guess it's time to eat some humble pie Mr Freemen and then once you've done that you can, take a deep breath, compose yourself and then write something positive here in respect of Gary's achievements......people will only love you more for it.

Anyhow well done Copper Cock!!!

cheers ali what a great weekend as usual with a fun task on what we thought was going to be a unfliable weekend. i must say i have never flown quite so fast for so long and was a very close win with only 1 second between 1-2 and 40 for third. then it ran into minutes. then we had some great chill time before the evening festivities started, with some awsome acro in very strong conditions. infinity tumbles misty flips helicopters as well as joined in flight sincro. the bands were realy great and i am not normally into music. as usual a not to miss weekend more later with anto storming to third in the b comp.

cheers gary

i must say i think this year was a great relaxed event and made better with team cook bill scott, woke up with a bang on the van and bacon egg sausage beans and a bun to get us on are way. i amd sure this made all the difference to give the edge, there was some exitement flying those cliffs full bar and i had one major blowout, also i heard a few go frontals. so goes to show that even the coast can have turbulance or at least glider wash. the bands were superb and i normally avoid the loud music but when you have paul doing some tecnical ska dancing you just have to join in. the acro guys did not disapoint even though the conditions were very strong winds aloft. yet in the camp site things were nice light and warm so perfect for drinking and socialising.

and of course it was fantastic to win and receive some fantstic prizes.

Way off the mark Guthrie..

I tried ringing Gary twice at around 11.30am & 11.40am Sunday morning ! to see how he was doing and he must of been flying with no answer.

Gary's flying was very much on form but I don't know his mind set in competitions.. but clearly its very good !

Well done Gary and great for the club.

cheers ronny i was up clough trying to fly with light thermals and what looked like the approaching seabreaze. had to slope land couple of times then all of sudden wind switched to se and came over the back and rained. i think i was flying when you rang or was walking with possie and the phone is well tucked away so difficult to get out.

Well done Gary ............. in mitigation (having thought i'd done well) .... Jocky briefed me on 200m radius on the TP's. Your pic shows they were 400m which really F***s things up. I thought you were turning soon!!

As usual I fly a different task to the rest!! :D

In retrospect I should have done this on Jans speedwing I think I would have been in pole position then
Maybe not enough wind at first but when it picked up later I reckon I would have whopped you all (including hangies if any had turned up)

i must say on one of the runs i only came off full bar for approx 200m and in hindsite quite dangerous but on full bar the wings do feel invincible. however your wing ed was a bit faster so good job you did not push it all the way as i might of been crying in my soup if you were a second faster than me

it is an interesting challenge but i do think that you can not compare speed of a hg and paraglider in speed terms. its like racing a hg with a sailplane there is no comparison. i dont think anyone can doubt the performance of even low performance hg in strong winds have better penetration that most pg exept r10-r11. the thing is pilon racing on a pg is too gangerous and may be ok on the coast but at east hill using full bar could be quite dangerous.

now this is not a challenge but why not get the target out on power and i will go out on the bailey and nucleon ppg wing to see how fast they are in safe smooth air. this is not a race but a comparison to see how a ppg wing compares :D :D :D :D

I don't have personal experience but I believe top end ppg's are bloody fast! I remember Simon Scott telling me his tale of flying his powered hg in the PPG Nationals a few years back. We thought the powered HG's were awesomely fast ....... and coupled to a rigid wing the Porsche of the air.
Simon flew the various tasks that were set, he was one of only two powered hangies. On a long race/navigation task he blasted off and midway around the course, thinking he was literally miles ahead he turned to see a group of ppg's bearing dowm on him. He couldn't believe the speed they were capable of.

Shortly after he signed up to fly pg's with a view to going powered; which he nows flies.

I wouldn't like to put money on this bet having seen these speed wings fly. I think a pilon race around East Hill (Quite small and tight) the agility of the speed wing would be hard to beat. Can you post on here if it ever happens I'd like to see this.

if it was a top to bottom race the speed wing would win by miles it would be fairer if it were somethong like a number of beats then race to bottom

Gary, I would not expect ps'g using speed bar ? your right its dangerous below 300ft.

I would use the Target against an ENA/B paraglider and a Litespeed against an ENC/D paraglider.

It would be good video and very interesting to see the results, the coast would be ideal with consistant smooth lift.

Weight range and pilot ability would be a bit of a factor but it will still give a good idea of the difference.

So if you wouldnt expect the pg to be using bar does that mean you would be flying the hg at trim speed aswell

Colin, the speed bar is a safety issue and no the hg would not be using the VB but.. vb's are safe to use below 300ft
