Internet Genius Required

Post by GlennP »

I m trying to upload my personal joomla based website from my pc ( running xammp local server) to my web host but i m not 100% confident i ll get it right.

is there anyone local to Newcastle on the forum got experience doing this? I know there are some clever IT type people in the club. If it can be done quickly there may be some cash in it.

I found the following guide helpful
http://www.boutell.com/newfaq/creating/hostmyown.html
this is a free service i use as i have a dynamic ip address.
http://dyn.com/dns/dyndns-free/?dyndns-redirect

sounds like you're well on the way though, give me call if youd like to discuss any details

I'll Have a look Chris. I'm not great with computers so the uploading is proving to be a nightmare. The building with Joomla once I got the hang of it was quite easy but using Filezilla FTP client and all this php mysql is causing too much drama.

I tried Noam but he installs servers and hadn't done a Joomla FTP Upload before.

I don't need a web designer. I'm not paying for a whole new website and space that I've already got. Just need help uploading a htdocs file to the remote server.

Might Colin Keightley be the man???

Updating websites is my area I'm afraid I'm still a bit green when it comes to total migration of a website. Although I do use filezilla
If Acro was easy they'd call it Cross Country

Hi Colin,

aye its a full migration from localhost to remote server. i managed the filezilla transfer after i solved the confusion over domain and username logins and transferred the files.

i ve still got the holding page on all my dns addresses though. i get errors on the php upload on mysql error #1044.

you get one thing solved but then another problem comes along. at least i ve got the time to do it with all this crap weather.

do you know much about the phpadmin / mysql side of things?

not really i started messing about with it a couple of years ago but was annoying the hell out of me, on my host mysql used to have fits where it worked then didnt work then stopped working completely so i left it alone after that

Hi Glenn,

Your mysql error sound like a host problem. Check privilleges to see what user and host have access to the database.

Hope this helps.

Lloyd.

I think I'm just going to pay someone to migrate the site and show me how to update it.

Can you recommend anyone Lloyd? Sounds like you know you're stuff.

Not sure which hosting co you're using, though would of thought they might have instructions like this.
