some great flying today in some very light winds with some nice light thermic conditions. and yes it is only febuary after all. paul was doing some good flying today an this cold and perfect day. i just hope the weather breaks so that i can focus on my work, but sometimes you have to be on the hill when it is working or else there is no chance to be in the sky.

great day paul you will have to get back to work soon or alse i have no chance.

Don't knock the flying at this time of year untill you've tried it. The peak of yesterday was just before Gary took off with me getting a few proper thermals the best with a steady climb of over 600ft per minute! Even got a little bouncy on exit. When the airs cold and the sunshines on to sunny slopes with a bit of wind to push everything up the hills it can be epic. Last Feb's record was Chris Scammel off Dale Head........Thermalled in no wind straight up to 6 grand+.

Keep grabbing them days while you can Gary.

The little mouse gets confused if there are too many things to work out....

Why do we need to spend more money to work out triangles ?

This is up to the pilot to have it all worked out before he takes off ?

All good XC flights are studied on the ground and mapped out (first basic rule)

Looked at your flight Gary on google earth and its not a triangle or even an out & return... you must return back to your starting point to complete the task.

A declared triangle must be where your shortest leg is no less than 28% of the total flight distance, and the (min dis) is 15k !

if you check out my flight you will see that i went right back over the take of to comlete the out and return which is 5.3 out == 21.2km

if you check the one at carlton i went back to my start gat to complete a 5.6 out and return =22.4k
i have a gps to make the most of the flight and i no where i started and where i finished

I would imagine most XC flights are NOT planned at all... or so many have told me.

Yes if someone marks waypoints before hand and sticks to them then that is great. Is that not a task though?

Have you got all the airspace, danger areas, down wind ridges marked out on your GPS ?

The golden rule of XC... if you dont know where you are land immediately !

yes i will show my garmin gps 76csx which has full airmaps and topo maps
but i rarely use it as i no where i am going befor i go so i tend not to bother using it. once i am flying i fly watch and listen and tend not to spend much time on my equipment unless i have to. after all you are flying the air and not a map or road only when i would be arround airspace would i be a lot more vigilant.

I've checked your flight and if you look on google earth (Clough) and it looks like you landed short on your return ? I can only accept from where you landed for the O & R
