Info from Ed Cleasby on the Northern Challenge Series 2020

Post by chrisfozz »

The Northern Challenge Series has now closed for 2020.

Provisional results (until 14/11/2020) are available for both the MAIN and HIKE and FLY at:

Results Northern Challenge Trophy - xcmap.net
if you would like to use xcmap to set tasks for your club please email chris@xcmap.net and I'll tell you how to do it, it's easy and free.

The final results will be published here, on my own website and via Skywings. Trophies will be engraved in the next four weeks and go to the worthy winners in a socially distanced manner appropriate to whatever rules we find ourselves living under at the time.

Despite losing the middle of the season and perhaps partly due to the limitations of xc flying this year, many of the tasks were attempted .... some occasionally making goal. However, the main purpose of the series (both events) is as a stepping stone to both competition flying and xc flying. Many of the skills you'll need are there - be that setting up and using instruments, learning to fly a defined course, pushing your personal envelope and trying things, learning to fly faster .... and having some fun in the bargain.

Looking to 2021. A few small changes may be considered and Chris and I welcome any suggestions. The basic thinking at this early juncture are:

1.  Retain most of the main tasks - certainly the most popular. Each of these tasks is also starting to form a league of their own across the years - so a very useful comparative table.

2.  The least popular tasks to be dropped and replaced. GRIDS are popular so all will be retained. A few (two or max three) new sites chosen for tasks. To be decided so any suggestions welcome. The total will still remain at 14.

4.  The current Hike n Fly tasks to remain unchanged. No new tasks.  Possibility of an X Dales under consideration - very early days.

5.  Current scoring algorithm to remain unchanged. Nothing is ever perfect but it does build in different levels of difficulty between tasks, balances speed against distance and seems reasonably fair. To change it may also upset the balance within the individual task league.

6.  Open and closed dates to remain unchanged.

Well done all those who took part, I look forward to 2021 and of course any suggestions you may have by 31st December latest.
