Weather Station update

Post by brian day »

As I understand there is a need to fund the remaining part of this project.
We have permission to place the weather station on East Hill or that area in a place open to all wind directions.

Here is a copy of the current understanding of expenditure required to have the station up and running. The committee have agreed to the expenditure, although there remains question regarding the need for a contract for the phone signal. The price for that will lower rather than become higher.

To complete the project this is what I think is needed:-
1. Computer board (I can supply)
2. Mobile phone board (GPRS/GSM) @ ~£50
3. Solar panel, battery, case. @ £258.72 https://mendipweather.co.uk/davis-vanta ... earch=6612
4. Weather proof case. @ £70.56 https://mendipweather.co.uk/davis-vanta ... al-shelter
5. Site. (Ron Freeman suggests Brandon). See: http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?x=40 ... 17917&lm=0
6. Base for mounting the station.
7. Mobile phone data contract. ~£10/month.
8. Annual maintenance (some thing to the landowner/farmer).

One off cost. Estimate: £379.28
Annual running cost. Estimate: £120 (mobile data contract).

Getting the weather from this station.
1. We can publish the data to popular weather sites including WeatherUnderground, PWSweather.com, CWOP, WOW, and AWEKAS and others;
2. We can publish the data to our site.
3. Text message the station for the current weather. EG. Text WEATHER to 07760........
4. One or all of the above.

As the January meeting is traditionally poorly attended, I am giving members the opportunity on here to raise any objections they may have to the expenditure going ahead.

If there are no objections by 30th December the committee will presume that the members are in favour of the project being funded from the club funds and the money will be made available for the completion of the weather station.

Please feel free to post or contact me directly with any queries.
See you out there!!!!!

Hi All,

The cost for the mobile data is £10/year.
And not £120 as previously stated.

Link updates...

Solar panel, battery, case. @ £258.72 https://www.mendipweather.co.uk/weather ... ption=true

Weather proof case. @ £70.56 https://www.mendipweather.co.uk/weather ... al-shelter

I am still looking at cheaper options.

Lloyd.

Wouldn't you think more members would stand up and say Horahhh on the forum "Yes we want a weather station" or maybe by their absence are saying too extravagant .....Either way say something

Weather station

Post by ron freeman »

Well here we go again.. myself and Lloyd just about had this sorted last year check out 'Private matters' Dec 19th 2016.. Weather station update

I had a great site all sorted, Lloyd had all the info & technical know how then it was put to the members..

Most seem to think it was a good idea then.. a couple of members brought up Club finances ! and also high lighted that local weather station were available for free but were absolutely completely useless for our needs.. so the whole issue then just died.

This time I've decided to stand back and see what happens..

Ronnie I'm not having a go at anyone or as you put it here we go again I'm simply making the point wouldn't it be good to see member's saying something anything. Don't the people trying to set this weather station up feel frustrated with the lack of feed back.

:x

I don't think this is going to work.....The very thing that we want off it....Weather.....will bring it to ruin....I just think it isn't at all practical.....that being said I would help with it.... engineering wise.....

As a few doubts seem to be arising, I will put a poll on the private section so that a record can be kept of the 'show of hands'

Please, to help those on the fence, if you're in strong favour, make your case, equally if you're strongly against please make your case for others to read and consider before making their vote.

The result of the poll will determine the result and as stated before will be taken on 30th December.
