weather station

I know a good position for the weather station the site is n.east of Brandon grid ref NU 045 180 There is an established phone mast there and its on top of a 300ft hill with a large flat top, aprox 700ft asl (true wind speed and direction) I think the farmer would be fine with it and the site will b...

Someone else said lenticular on another site, but square? I know how lenticular form and where they form, but this shape would suggest wind from two directions at right angles, is that possible, or probable? I'm not entirely convinced. Give me an explanation of the square shape and convince me! Thi...

Lenticualr

Lenticular clouds prevelant 70% of the time in the UK. Our very own Cheviot hills are renowned for them

This is caused by the hills upwind making the air bounce in the unstable layer of air trapped between the stable air below and above ;-)

With out vario first

Ali, when you take up gliding lessons you are taught to use a vario, airspeed, & altitude indicators from day one. I teach my students to use a vario when they are ready for soaring and I can see a huge difference straight away in there soaring patterns and decision making. I say get them on ins...

Nova Phantom

Its seems to me that Nova have spotted a big gap in the market. There are lots of pilots who want to fly gliders with more performance but sadly don't want to put the required work in before there ready to fly one. Here we have the 'Nova Phantom' (twice the price) but what the heck, ego has always b...

Hi Ali, if they can afford a wing, harness & reserve, surely they can buy there own wind meter ? I do think next on the agenda - who looks after all this equipment ? - how long do they have it for ? and more importantly what security does the club have if they disappear with the gear ? or has al...

Club winch

The NYSW club have bought a Koch winch and I have just done a couple of days training a very keen bunch of pilots from the club to tow and operate the winch. They achieved over 55 launches in very light winds and there new operator was very good with great qualifications, he is a former paraglider p...

Launching in strong winds

Gary, often I see pilots getting dragged when trying to launch in strong winds (Youtube is full of it..) now since your hands are connected to your shoulders you are now being dragged with the full weight of your body lagging behind you ! I would say the shoulders are taking the strain.. thus eventu...

Alison Leddy

Its myself and Noam from Pegswood and yet again flying in perfect conditions with very smooth 12-14mph (no track logs Gary)

Alison Leddy met us on the beach that day and asked if she could use the pictures for Blyth Valley Council.

I think some drove to Model ridge and was blown out..
